A short story about justice and secrets

I have a thing for westerns. And justice. So I wrote one.

Now, before you roll your eyes, listen. There’s a lot to be said for a good western. You’ve got your hero, and a villain, and a trusty horse. But as much as I love the tried & true western, I had to be different.

My bad guy? He’s scum, of course. He’s a rotten bastard at his core. But my good guy? The hero? Well…you’ve never met anyone quite like my hero.

Residents of a small dusty town are held fast in the grip of a controlling, cruel egomaniac. Those who try to leave are hunted down and killed. When a stranger comes seeking medical help, enforcers begin dying one by one. Only one person knows why, and that person may be the town’s only hope. This is a tale of secrets, hope and the bravery it takes to stand up to cruelty.”

So here’s the deal. Once a week, on Mondays in fact, I’ll be posting one chapter of my short story. Even if you don’t normally read Westerns, I invite you to give this one a try. I dare you not to fall for Bear.

You’ll see.

A note for the sensitive among you. There is violence. This is the Old West after all. Life was hard then, you know. There is also the barest hint of what some of you might view as an “uncommon relationship”. Trust me, two women living together back then were more common than you might realize.

There’s nothing that you can’t read aloud to your Grandmother, I just thought you might appreciate knowing up front.

So, Mondays — you, me, a horse and…you’ll see.
