I was lucky enough to find this book in a second-hand bookstore, after years of casual searching. It presents ideas that are both new, and yet not. The appeal of this book is that one need not be wedded to the idea of a square foot, by square foot garden. The basic principles can be applied to a modified bed, or even a large container like a trough or overly large bucket. It is worth a few read-throughs, with pen and paper nearby. Its methodology is very similar to bio-intensive gardening, and the two ideals together will allow everyone to grow more food in smaller spaces.

This is worth every dollar.

One warning though, be aware that “Mel’s Mix”, that special soil, is expensive to create. I personally recommend compost, compost and more compost. But Mel’s Mix is a good starting point.
